We’ve never been ‘just a bank’. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee’. We’re united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we’re making it happen.
It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.
About the opportunity
Working in a cross-functional, agile team, our Engineers deliver, support, and continuously improve high-quality technology solutions that create meaningful outcomes for Bendigo Bank and its customers.
This role is part of our shift toward becoming a modern technology organisation. We aspire to operate through Team Topologies–aligned teams that are empowered, customer-focused, and measured by their ability to deliver safely, quickly, and reliably.
The Senior Data Engineer is a hands-on technical specialist responsible for designing, building, and maintaining core enterprise data products on our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Lakehouse. This role's purpose is to implement robust, secure, and scalable data pipelines—transforming raw data into high-performing, business-ready Serve Layers using Data Vault 2.0 methodologies and modern Analytics Engineering practices. Engineers at Bendigo Bank go beyond just writing code—they help define problems, innovate, design solutions, deploy and monitor changes with automated testing, and work collaboratively to reduce complexity and enable rapid, safe delivery.
In this role you’ll get to…
- Data Architecture & Engineering: Design and implement reliable, maintainable data pipelines and architecture within the GCP ecosystem (BigQuery, GCS, GKE, Cloud Run).
- Modern Data Modeling: Translate complex Raw and Curate (Data Vault 2.0) models into highly performant, business-facing Serve Layers (e.g., Kimball Star Schemas, Normalized SCD Type 2 models) tailored to product needs.
- Analytics Engineering & Code Quality: Write clean, modular, and well-structured SQL and Python using dbt (data build tool). Participate in peer code reviews and provide constructive feedback to improve quality and reduce risk.
- Automation & Deploy: Build and maintain automated testing frameworks and Git-integrated CI/CD pipelines to ensure the correctness, resilience, and rapid deployment of data-as-code.
- Security & Compliance (Trust): Implement strict data security protocols, including BigQuery Policy Tags, Row/Column-Level Security, and dynamic data masking, to protect highly sensitive financial and PII/KYC data.
- Technical Leadership: Contribute to technical design and solution architecture through team discussions. Act as a technical pillar for the team, ensuring consistency, currency, and reusability across the enterprise data product portfolio.
What you’ll bring to the role
To be successful in the role you will have: …(No more than six bullet points)
- Advanced GCP & BigQuery Expertise: Deep proficiency in BigQuery SQL optimization, partitioning, and cost control, coupled with Python scripting and experience managing containerized data workloads (GKE, Cloud Run) utilizing GCS as a data lake.
- Modern Data Architecture & Data Vault 2.0: Proven experience executing the data journey (Raw à Curate à Serve), with strong capabilities in building Data Vault 2.0 structures (Hubs, Links, Satellites, PITs) and designing versatile consumption layers (Kimball Star Schemas, SCD Type 2).
- Data Engineering with dbt: Deep hands-on experience using dbt (Core/Cloud) to orchestrate complex SQL transformations, translate logical source-to-target mappings, and implement automated data quality testing and lineage.
- CI/CD & "Data-as-Code" Practices: A strong software engineering mindset, managing all schemas and data pipelines via Git, and leveraging automated CI/CD tools to rigorously test, validate, and deploy BigQuery DDL/DML.
- Data Security & Classification: Practical experience protecting highly sensitive financial data (PII, KYC) by implementing and enforcing data access policies using BigQuery Policy Tags and classification frameworks.
- Enterprise Ecosystem Integration: Familiarity with broader enterprise tools to scale our platform, including Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), orchestration (Control-M), enterprise ingestion (Qlik CDC), and data stewardship (Collibra, GCP Knowledge Catalog).
