We’ve never been ‘just a bank’. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee’. We’re united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we’re making it happen.
It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.
About the opportunity
The technology space is evolving, and so are we. At Bendigo Bank we are simplifying our technology function, creating clearer accountabilities aligned with our strategy and customer needs. With a focus on delivering innovative services at scale, we’re creating a future-ready customer experience and high performing culture.
The Principal Engineer is our most senior engineering contributor within a domain. You will provide deep technical leadership across multiple teams, shaping our long-term technical vision and guiding the evolution of our systems and platforms. This role combines architectural thinking, hands-on technical expertise, and strategic influence to ensure our systems are secure, scalable, and sustainable.
Acting as a trusted advisor to Engineering Managers, Product Owners, and senior leadership, you will foster a culture of engineering excellence. You'll champion modern practices and mentor engineers across the organisation to lift capability, solve complex problems, and improve delivery performance.
In this role you’ll get to...
- Lead the design and evolution of core systems and platforms, shaping technical direction through collaboration and architectural modelling.
- Promote and embed best practices in testing, observability, security, performance, and CI/CD to uplift engineering quality.
- Act as a senior mentor and technical coach, building capability through design reviews, deep dives, and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to cross-domain initiatives, large-scale transformations, and strategic discussions.
- Simplify complexity through modularisation, decoupling, and strong interface contracts.
- Partner with product and engineering leaders to align priorities and mitigate delivery risk.
What you’ll bring to the role
To be successful in the role you will have:
- Extensive experience as a senior engineer, architect, or technical leader in complex environments.
- Deep expertise in software architecture, distributed systems, and large-scale platform design.
- A proven track record of leading the design and delivery of high-impact, secure, and reliable technical systems.
- Strong systems-thinking ability, able to navigate between tactical solutions and strategic impact.
- Excellent communication and influence skills, with experience mentoring and coaching fellow engineers.
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience; advanced cloud or systems design certifications are highly valued.
This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, located at our Melbourne or Bendigo Head Office locations.
We offer flexible work options that put our people first, working in a hybrid model with a minimum local Head Office attendance requirement determined by your Leader, to find a rhythm that works best for you and your team. We believe that coming into the office some of the time is the best way to learn, stay connected and collaborate effectively, especially for key activities like team days, 1:1s, and town halls.
We believe a diverse workforce supported by an inclusive culture is central to our success and we actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity of thought to our business. We support candidate requests for adjustment to accommodate an illness, injury, or disability to equitably participate in the selection process.
If you're already part of Bendigo Bank (including Community Banks), you'll need to apply through People Hub to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.
Still in two minds?
Research suggests 60% of women and underrepresented groups might stop here, even after getting as far as drafting an application. We believe that diversity makes every team stronger, so even if you don’t tick every box we still want to see your application!
Please note shortlisting and interviews may take place prior to the advertised close date, so don't delay apply now!
