We’ve never been ‘just a bank’. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee’. We’re united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we’re making it happen.
It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.
About the opportunity
The technology space is evolving, and so are we. At Bendigo Bank we are simplifying our technology function, creating clearer accountabilities aligned with our strategy and customer needs. With a focus on delivering innovative services at scale, we’re creating a future-ready customer experience and high performing culture.
We are looking for a Principal Engineer who will be the strategic visionary and technical leader responsible for shaping the future of both Customer and Workforce identity across the enterprise.
In this role, you will champion modern authentication, authorisation, and automated governance practices while translating complex technical concepts into clear, secure architectural decisions. By mentoring engineering teams and driving our identity roadmap, you will directly safeguard our digital ecosystem and enable seamless, secure user experiences.
In this role you’ll get to...
- Define and shape architectures, designs, standards, and patterns for both Customer and Workforce identity.
- Provide technical thought leadership, working closely with stakeholders to embed modern authentication, authorisation, and governance practices.
- Offer technical oversight and design assurance to projects, vendors, and internal teams, translating complex identity concepts into clear, defensible decisions.
- Develop and deliver the strategic roadmap for investment and capability uplift across the Identity domain.
- Drive the transition towards automated practices while actively mentoring engineering teams.
- Own and lead by example across all Identity Engineering outcomes to ensure alignment with organisational objectives and risk requirements.
What you’ll bring to the role
To be successful in the role you will have:
- 10+ years of experience designing and implementing enterprise grade identity solutions.
- Proven expertise developing roadmaps encompassing modern identity patterns (passwordless, passkeys, RBAC/ABAC), machine identity, and industry protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML).
- Hands on experience with automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) to securely administer and govern identity platforms.
- Strong technical proficiency across key identity platforms including Entra, Sailpoint, CyberArk, PING, IBM Security Verify, Active Directory, and modern DevOps tools.
- A deep understanding of Privileged & Secrets Management solutions, including discovery, credential vaulting, and ephemeral access.
- Exceptional communication and architectural leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to guide, mentor, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, located at our Melbourne or Bendigo Head Office locations.
We offer flexible work options that put our people first, working in a hybrid model with a minimum local Head Office attendance requirement determined by your Leader, to find a rhythm that works best for you and your team. We believe that coming into the office some of the time is the best way to learn, stay connected and collaborate effectively, especially for key activities like team days, 1:1s, and town halls.
We believe a diverse workforce supported by an inclusive culture is central to our success and we actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity of thought to our business. We support candidate requests for adjustment to accommodate an illness, injury, or disability to equitably participate in the selection process.
If you're already part of Bendigo Bank (including Community Banks), you'll need to apply through People Hub to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.
Still in two minds?
Research suggests 60% of women and underrepresented groups might stop here, even after getting as far as drafting an application. We believe that diversity makes every team stronger, so even if you don’t tick every box we still want to see your application!
Please note shortlisting and interviews may take place prior to the advertised close date, so don't delay apply now!
