We've never been ‘just a bank'. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee'. We're united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we're making it happen.
It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.
Every day, our people handle vital data—from customer and transaction details to physical assets and processes. We are looking for a hands-on Lead Data Steward to serve as the central data governance expert for our Consumer Banking Division, embedded within the Consumer Performance & Enablement team.
In this critical role, you will bridge the gap between data and business processes. Your initial focus will be leading a comprehensive stocktake of our Critical and Sensitive Data Elements (CDEs) across our core domains (Asset, Customer Complaints, Customer Support & Services, Process Architecture, Products, and Operational Risk).
By tracing how data is created, transformed, and managed throughout its journey, you will help us improve data quality, reduce risk, and meet regulatory obligations. Reporting to the Senior Manager Consumer Performance & Analytics, you will do the operational heavy lifting for our General Managers (Data Custodians), providing them with clear, process-mapped insights to make informed decisions.
Key responsibilities:
- Data Discovery & Stocktake: Lead the identification, definition, and cataloguing of Critical and Sensitive Data Elements (CDEs) across all Consumer Banking data domains using enterprise governance tools and metadata repositories.
- Value Stream & Process Analysis: Follow the journey of our data. Map end-to-end flows to identify where data is created, transformed, and consumed, pinpointing the root cause of data quality issues and control gaps.
- Support Data Custodians: Act as the key conduit between Divisional Data Custodians, Data Trust & Governance, and the Data and AI Portfolio. Represent the division at the Data Management Authority and Custodians Community of Practice.
- Framework Implementation: Embed the Data Management Framework, establishing data lifecycle processes (creation to deletion), access controls, usage guidelines, and quality benchmarking thresholds.
- Drive the Data Maturity Roadmap: Develop, manage, and deliver the Consumer Banking Division data maturity roadmap, connecting governance initiatives with broader commercial outcomes.
- Champion Best Practice: Review proposed process and system changes, actively challenging the status quo and embedding continuous improvement into day-to-day operations.
What you will bring
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in data management, governance, risk, or compliance within a large, complex commercial environment (banking or financial services preferred).
- Data Asset & Process Discovery: Proven track record in cataloguing CDEs and tracing data flows across complex business processes and value streams.
- Systems & Analysis: Advanced understanding of banking systems, regulatory environments, and reporting tools such as Power BI.
- Continuous Improvement: Experience applying root-cause problem solving and continuous improvement methodologies (Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent is highly regarded).
- Stakeholder Influence: Strong capability to translate complex technical/data policies into practical business terms for senior leaders, strategic partners, and operational teams.
