We’ve never been ‘just a bank’. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee’. We’re united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we’re making it happen.

It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.

About the opportunity

The technology space is evolving, and so are we. At Bendigo Bank we are simplifying our technology function, creating clearer accountabilities aligned with our strategy and customer needs. With a focus on delivering innovative services at scale, we’re creating a future-ready customer experience and high performing culture.

As an Engineering Manager - Data Foundations you will lead cross-functional data squads, taking ownership of the people, delivery, and technical health of our enterprise data platforms. You will be empowered to create the conditions for safe, fast, and sustainable delivery, enabling your teams to build secure, scalable, and maintainable data pipelines, lakes, and warehouses that serve actionable insights to our customers.

You will shape our ways of working as we modernize our data landscape, set high standards for data reliability and security, and champion best practices in DataOps, data governance, test automation, and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) for data.

In this role you’ll get to...

  • Provide leadership and direction to data engineering squads to drive outcomes and ensure alignment with our overarching data strategy and objectives.
  • Ensure the delivery of scalable, secure, and reliable data architectures—such as cloud data lakes and lakehouses—that are aligned with business goals.
  • Uplift data engineering practices across the team, including clean code, data quality testing, version control, and DataOps.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement through root cause analysis and learning from data pipeline incidents or quality issues.
  • Collaborate with data architects, analytics teams, and strategic vendor partners to manage system evolution, reduce legacy complexity, and enable AI/agentic capabilities.
  • Drive an inclusive team culture across both internal squads and managed service partners to ensure shared ownership and collaboration.

What you’ll bring to the role

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • A deep understanding of modern data engineering practices, DataOps, and the full data lifecycle.
  • Proven experience as an engineering manager or technical lead in a delivery-focused, data-intensive environment.
  • The ability to lead and motivate technical teams in an agile environment, ideally with experience navigating large-scale cloud data migrations (e.g., from on-premise to GCP or AWS).
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, coaching, and developing high-performing data engineering talent.
  • Experience in managing complex production data systems, enterprise data warehouses, and supporting high-availability data platforms.
  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity, located at our Melbourne or Bendigo Head Office locations.

We offer flexible work options that put our people first, working in a hybrid model with a minimum local Head Office attendance requirement determined by your Leader, to find a rhythm that works best for you and your team. We believe that coming into the office some of the time is the best way to learn, stay connected and collaborate effectively, especially for key activities like team days, 1:1s, and town halls.

We believe a diverse workforce supported by an inclusive culture is central to our success and we actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity of thought to our business. We support candidate requests for adjustment to accommodate an illness, injury, or disability to equitably participate in the selection process.

If you're already part of Bendigo Bank (including Community Banks), you'll need to apply through People Hub to submit a valid application. We’re keen to support you with the next step in your career.

Still in two minds?

Research suggests 60% of women and underrepresented groups might stop here, even after getting as far as drafting an application. We believe that diversity makes every team stronger, so even if you don’t tick every box we still want to see your application!

Please note shortlisting and interviews may take place prior to the advertised close date, so don't delay apply now!
